Butcher Plasterworks

Original period details, such as plaster cornices and ceiling roses, not to mention mirror frames and fireplace surrounds are often what distinguish the charming home from the indifferent house.

If you buy a typical 18th, 19th or early 20th century house, the chances are that at least some of the original mouldings have been ripped out, or they have fallen into disrepair.

North London-based Butcher Plasterworks is one of the few specialist companies that still use fibrous plaster, which is both tough and versatile, since it is made from a mixture of plaster and hessian, to make bespoke architectural details.

Whether you want a run of cornice or something more fancy, this small company will be able to suggest a solution, either replicating what is there or using its own huge pictorial reference library.

Prices to supply and fix replacement cornicing from £25 per metre.

Renovation

Drew Pritchard

If you buy a door or window with original stained glass that needs restoration, or you would like to replace the wood panels with some period glazing, consult specialist Drew Pritchard. Not only does he have what is probably the largest stock of external doors and windows in the country, he also has thousands of pieces of original stained glass and a restoration workshop in Llandudno, North Wales. He and his specialist team will do everything from minor repairs on damaged glass, water sealing and re-leading to fitting reinforcement bars or even invisible panels of double glazing behind the original glass. He travels to London, will collect if necessary and will even fit a temporary door while repairs are being carried out on an existing one.

Drummonds

If your enamel bath needs re-enamelling and you want a Rolls Royce job done, Drummonds is the company to do it. It claims to be unique in that it offers "dry" as opposed to "wet" enamelling, leaving your bath with a thicker, glossier finish that is guaranteed to last 25 years, but, according to James Walker of Drummonds, should last a century. Expect to pay from £750 plus collection/delivery (in the region of £100 to £150) in the London area. The bath is sent away to a factory in eastern Europe and comes home within four to six weeks. Drummonds will also supply taps, fittings and trimmings to match.

London Furniture Services

This sofa and chair re-upholstery and renovation company has been run as a family business for more than 100 years. The boss, Michael Cohen, will come to your house and give you an estimate before whisking your piece of furniture away to his workshop. He can supply fabric samples on request and will advise on what needs doing, whether it is major internal renovation or a simple repair and polish. Tailored loose covers for chairs start from £275 plus the cost of the fabric; re-upholstered sofas start at about £400, which is a bargain compared to the cost of buying a new decent-quality sofa. The service takes from two weeks.
