Smithfield market saved

Smithfield General Market Building has been saved for London in a lightning move by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears. The reprieve follows campaigns by, among others, English Heritage and Homes & Property, writes Philippa Stockley

Some of the beautiful old buildings were at risk of being bulldozed.

Instead, they will be sensitively restored, creating a vibrant, attractive quarter similar to Covent Garden or Spitalfields.

Blear’s action is part of the increasing move towards restoring and re-using much-loved buildings — which also saves energy and money.
