Herts is trumps for commuters

Under way is a £120 million project to upgrade St Albans station - with five million passengers a year, it is one of the busiest in the Home Counties - and redevelop eight acres of surrounding land.

It is the first mixed-use development to be built on a major transport interchange outside London, according to developer Linden Homes.

Highlight of the regeneration is Vivo, a scheme of 362 flats alongside offices, a GP surgery and fitness club.

It forms an integrated part of the station improvements, which include upgraded platforms and access, a multi-storey car park, bus garage, bicycle storage and retail outlets.

“A bigger, better and brighter station will emerge on the site, imaginatively funded by commercial development,” promises Dyan Crowther, route director of Network Rail.

More enjoyable commuting could also further boost demand for prestige family homes in the countryside around St Albans. Already there are expensive pockets of executive housing.

“It will boost capacity and be a catalyst for further growth in St Albans,” adds Philip Davies, Linden’s chief executive.

Homes at Vivo will go on sale later this year, with the first completions in spring 2008. Prices are expected to start at £200,000. Call Linden on 01895 827400.
