Can do

In the quiet streets of Soho (but less than five minutes' walk from the heaving hub of Piccadilly Circus) is Do, a sharp shop for modern design that opened earlier this year, says Barbara Chandler
pause
Do’s architect-designed interior has an unusual grid of exposed ceiling beams to show off an imaginative selection of lighting, and extends surprisingly far back, with stairs down to a large lower level.

Stop by for that perfectly original gift for design-junkie friends and family. Or get stuff to fast-forward your own home into the 21st century, inspired perhaps by a new title from the shop's stimulating stock of design books.

Tableware is particularly strong, from budget tumblers from France and Hong Kong to exclusive fine mouth-blown glassware from the Czech Republic.

A fabulous range of large-scale coloured decorative stickers for walls, floors and even windows comes from Domestic in France, which has a stable of about 30 international designers. These include our own Florian Kremb, who is working with the shop's owner, Andrew Ying, on own-brand designer furniture.

Stand-out items include the Impilible set of six tumblers (£7.50); the Delight felt pendant shade in white felt with butterfly cut-outs (£35); shaped plywood vases (£9 each); the stunning handmade Octo Finnish birch lampshade (£390); and the intriguing "pot aux roses", which is supplied with wools and patterns for stitching into its porcelain canvas (£85).
