Paper round
Selfridges has created this month's sensational windows around a theme of paper. They show how even the most basic material can be transformed into high design, says Barbara Chandler
Fashion set pieces on Oxford Street feature the ancient art of Kirigami (paper cutting) with intricate laser-cut backdrops. Round the corner in Orchard Street are Selfridges' three new Wonder Windows, which are among the store’s largest, each measuring 5m by 3m. They have become art galleries: a completely new idea for shopfronts.
On show will be a changing programme of specially commissioned art installations. At the moment, you can see fantastic paper sculpture by Richard Sweeney, a 23-year-old arts graduate from Huddersfield. Peer through the paper to see the Wonder Room, the store's ritzy new luxury department filled with top brands.
On the other side of the store more paper-themed windows showcase home products at the cutting edge.
