June: a fruitful month

The season is in full swing in London and June’s diary is jammed with glamorous shows and exhibitions, from festivals of architecture to celebrations of sculpture, garden design, interior design and sparkling jewellery. International Ceramics Fair and Seminar

Open Squares Weekend
Saturday and Sunday
For once you can breach those formidable walls, hedges and fences that encircle London’s hidden green treasures this weekend. Gardens range from the stately and formal to the frankly eccentric. Use a single ticket (£7.50 on the day) to visit as many of the 170-plus gardens as stamina allows, or book in advance for £6 at a Capital Gardens centre, with a £5 voucher thrown in. Children under 12 go free.

Summer Open Garden

Meet butterflies, bees, birds and even toads and newts at the Summer Open Garden weekend in the wonderful half-acre wildlife garden run as a charity at Roots & Shoots. Explore the new eco-training centre opened last summer by the Prince of Wales and enjoy garden tours and beekeeping demonstrations on both days. Special treats for children on Sunday include juggling, solar energy and art workshops, with storytelling in the “dragon’s den”. Admission costs £2 for adults and is free for children. Profits go to the National Gardens Scheme.

Clarence Mews Open

This quiet Hackney backstreet is home to an expanding number of artists, artisans and architects, who are throwing open their workshops and studios. See distinctive hand-printed fashion and furnishings from Cressida Bell, along with furniture from designer-makers and turned British woodware.

The Art Car Boot Fair
