The season is in full swing in London and June’s diary is jammed with glamorous shows and exhibitions, from festivals of architecture to celebrations of sculpture, garden design, interior design and sparkling jewellery. Open Squares WeekendSaturday and Sunday
For once you can breach those formidable walls, hedges and fences that encircle London’s hidden green treasures this weekend. Gardens range from the stately and formal to the frankly eccentric. Use a single ticket (£7.50 on the day) to visit as many of the 170-plus gardens as stamina allows, or book in advance for £6 at a Capital Gardens centre, with a £5 voucher thrown in. Children under 12 go free.

Meet butterflies, bees, birds and even toads and newts at the Summer Open Garden weekend in the wonderful half-acre wildlife garden run as a charity at Roots & Shoots.
