Book of the week

Outdoor Spaces

If the sun fails to shine in the coming weeks, invest in a copy of a new book, Outdoor Spaces, as a consolation.

It aims to inspire you to create wonderful outdoor rooms, wherever you live, whether all you have is the tiniest of patios or your backyard is really a field.

Apparently, an outdoor room should be all about display and comfort: think stripey cushions on wood and metal furniture, strings of tea lights; candles and lanterns everywhere; good, simple food; and, of course, a chilled bottle of wine or a big jug of Pimms.

The book is largely based on merchandise from the American store Pottery Barn (http://www.potterybarn.com) but none the worse for that.

Outdoor Spaces: Easy Ideas and Inspiration for Casual Outdoor Living, by Christene Barberich (Bonnier Books, £20).
